Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic, the initial hope for a transformative "world after" has faded. Hopes for reducing non-essential travel, flexible work arrangements, and combating climate change have been overshadowed by a return to economic growth, resource exploitation, and geopolitical divisions. Despite Europe's temporary unity, the brief positive environmental impacts, such as reduced emissions during confinement, have not led to lasting change, leaving a sense of disappointment in the lack of sustained societal transformation.
